I'd have trouble going back to a solid body for this style music. I think the Hollowbody is pretty crucial. If you look at pics of his pedals, he has a single footswitch on the floor for his Mesa. You can see every picture of his Mesa shows he has his lead/rhythm footswitch plugged into the lead/rhythm footswitch jack on the front of his amp. Based upon a lot of pictures of the knobs and the gafer tape on his amps, he sets the lead channel very loud - louder than I ever set mine.

Later the MB catalog included this option at least as far back as the Mark IIIs as far as I can remember. Mike Bendinelli's initials on on my amp's chassis - when I met him while touring their shop in 1985 he mentioned that they had made only 3 such Coliseum Mark IIBs. This perspective is from owning an original Coliseum Series Mark IIB that I ordered direct from Mesa wired for Simulclass operation (2 power tubes in Class A, 4 power tubes in Class AB). The Mark IIC, IIC+, and Mark III in their evolution were able to produce heavier, more aggressive lead tones IMHO.

For over 30 years I have had the wonderful opportunity to watch generations of players who want "to buy the best amp" end up less than satisfied with a Mesa Boogie when their ears and brain were thinking about songs recorded with Marshalls.

These all have a starting point of a Fender amp, and setting aside all of the history regarding how Marshall amps were the offspring of a Fender Bassman, the original Mesa Mark Series amps were designed around generating distortion in the preamp stage and were not specifically centered on the voicing of power tubes at full clipping. The main thing to keep in mind is the spectrum of intended voicings for each Boogie Mark generation.
